Two dozen hikers were guided by
ALT member and naturalist Gary Krofta into the Hemlock Swamp on
November 4. The route crossed private
land and City conservation land, as well as skirting the edge of the Blottman-Kenton
Nature Preserve. After traversing a stretch of wetland, hikers were
rewarded by reaching an isolated patch of upland that is identified on
US Geological Survey maps as Hemlock Island.

||One of the plant species observed on the hike was this
American Holly (ilex opaca).
|The Eastern Hemlock (tsuga canadensis) provides a dense
canopy which results in a relatively open forest floor.
