A Guided Walk to Attleboro's Hemlock Swamp

Two dozen hikers were guided by ALT member and naturalist Gary Krofta into the Hemlock Swamp on November 4. The route crossed private land and City conservation land, as well as skirting the edge of the Blottman-Kenton Nature Preserve. After traversing a stretch of wetland, hikers were rewarded by reaching an isolated patch of upland that is identified on US Geological Survey maps as Hemlock Island.

The hike route is outlined in blue on the Google map below.

One of the plant species observed on the hike was this American Holly (ilex opaca).
The Eastern Hemlock (tsuga canadensis) provides a dense canopy which results in a relatively open forest floor.
