In Memory of Martha Nickerson

It is with sadness that we mourn the death of benefactor Martha Nickerson, who died on February 23, 2011. Martha was a school teacher and school librarian in Attleboro for many years, and before that she served her country and saw the world by working as a teacher on American military bases abroad. She taught in France, England, the Netherlands, Turkey, Japan, and Morocco.

Martha was raised on a dairy farm on Richardson Avenue and she donated 48 acres of that land to the Attleboro Land Trust in 2001. The Nickerson Walking Woods Preserve will be forever preserved and will feature walking trails for the public. The land trust is currently designing a loop trail with boardwalks and a small parking area on the site.

In this photo, taken at the law office of Jim Lewis, Martha reviews a plan showing her gift of land, following the signing of a conservation restriction on January 16, 2003. Standing from left to right are Larry St. Pierre (ALT Board Member), Dan Goulet (Ten Mile River Watershed Alliance), Geoff Gaunt (former president of the ALT), Jackie Cabral (former ALT Board Member), and friend Jane Nerney.
